Hoop Dreams?

"Billy, sometimes you win but really lose, and sometimes you lose but you really win"
- Gloria Clemente "White Men Can't Jump"

Gloria sums it up about right.

Allow me to digress... we went to the ward Halloween party a few days ago and the kids had a great time. It was the usual concoction of organized chaos that the kids just seem to love. Lots of screaming, games and plastic spiders.

As we entered the gym, Josh tunnel-vision-focused on a sign advertising a free raffle to win on of those ginourmous basketball games that you might see in an arcade or maybe in a pizza joint. You know, one of those ones with the count-down clock and two hoops.

He instantly declared his intentions to win this prize and spent the remainder of the evening hovering around this thing watching the entries fill in the box. Dad helped by showing him the secret of drawing-winning by carefully folding his entry into some semi-origami shape and thus giving the person pulling out the entry something of substance to grab onto that stood out from the other sheets of paper.

Well, long story short, sure enough a few hours later towards the end of the party, Josh comes running up practically doing cartwheels, "I won! I won! I won!". Oh no. Suddenly to realities hit mom and dad. First, we have to get this thing home and second, we have to house this beast.

This thing even looked big sitting in the gym which is a really big sign.

Thankfully there was a family FedEx truck at the party that night so transportation was no biggie. Now... where to put it? Josh's room, no way.

It really is THAT BIG.

We ended up dropping it only about 10 feet from where we brought it through the door. Yay! Basketball in the living room! A kid's dream and a parent's nightmare.

We tried to strike bargain with Josh...

Donate to a needy child? "No way!"
Sell and you keep the money? "Better."

Hmmm... The final compromise was to fold the whole thing up and cover it with an enourmous blue tarp on our deck where the squirrels can play with it until next spring. When we again suggest donating it to needy children.

Ugh! Anyone out there interested?

This is a perfect VanderHoeven toy. Don't tell me Jeff wants to get rid of it. I think it looks nice in your living room!!! Way to go Josh!

I am sure we could find some room for that in my garage!
