We have been very negligent about posting to our blog lately as we seem to have hit yet another stretch in our family schedule where virtually every waking moment is has been taken up by some commitment on our calendar.
That said, a couple of Saturdays ago on 3/14, we had our Cub Scout Pinewood Derby again. If you recall, last year, Joshua took second place in a very successful run. This being his last year of eligibility since next year he will be too old for Cubs, we were determined to do even better.
We again went with a very basic Ikea-inspired car design, stained an lacquered wood with shockingly no vinyl at all on the car. Josh tolerated the design as long as we includuded some pieces of a broken circuit board he found out on the street. That accounts for the little red and blue bumps on the top of the car. Josh named his car the “VanderHoeven Machine”. Good boy.
We were worried that this car wasn’t as fast as what we had used last year as I had some trouble futzing with the wheels to get them lined up just right.
Those fears were quickly gone though once we actually got over to the Stake Center and got racing. This car turned out to be very fast and posted both the best overall average time in the many heats it ran (2.64 seconds). We also posted the best time for a single run (2.62 seconds). I believe that this was vs. 17 other cars racing in his group.
After running several heats, the fastest four cars were selected to run in the final series of four races. Josh won all four of those races as well and at the end of the day ended up in first place. Here is one of those races. Josh's car is the one on the far side of the track.
He was of course thrilled.
